Ehretia Leaves Turning Yellow, Brown or Falling Off

By Muhammad Hamza · Published · Updated

Ehretia cone plants with healthy green leaves at five growth stages

Yellow leaves on Ehretia usually mean the roots are too wet or the plant is stressed. The quick check: push a finger 2 to 3 cm into the soil. If it is soaked, water less and improve the drainage. If it is dry, water deeply. Brown or black leaves usually mean the plant is too dry.

Yellow leaves are the question our customers ask most. The causes below come from grower experience and plant references. Ehretia is also called Fukien tea, so you may see it under that name elsewhere.

What do the leaf signs mean?

How do I check the soil properly?

  1. Push a finger 2 to 3 cm into the soil, next to the stem.
  2. If the soil is wet and cold, the roots may be sitting in water.
  3. If the top is dry but deeper soil is wet, water less often.
  4. If it is dry all the way down, the plant needs a deep watering.

Experts' rule of thumb is that yellow leaves point to too much water and brown leaves point to too little. Both extremes can make the leaves fall, so check the soil before you change anything.

What should I do first?

  1. Check the soil as above.
  2. Make sure the pot or planter has drainage holes and is not standing in water.
  3. Move nothing. Keep the plant in full sun in the same place.
  4. Water deeply when the top 2 to 3 cm are dry, and do not water again until it is.
  5. Add fertilizer only according to the label. Too much can hurt.
  6. Give it time. New growth is the sign that the plant is recovering.

Can lack of light or nutrients cause yellow leaves?

Yes. Ehretia is a sun plant. If one side is shaded by a wall or a tree, the leaves on that side often turn yellow. A plant that has stayed in the same soil for a long time can also run short of nutrients, and a little fertilizer helps.

When should I worry?

Worry if outer leaves keep yellowing after you have fixed the watering, if the stems turn soft or black near the base, or if you see pests. In those cases send us a photo on WhatsApp, and read our care guide for the full routine.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my Ehretia leaves turning yellow?

Most often the roots are too wet or the soil drains poorly. Check the top 2 to 3 cm of soil. It can also be a lack of light or nutrients, hard water, or stress after a move.

Why are the leaves turning brown?

Brown or black leaves usually point to a plant that has dried out too much. Water deeply and check that the water reaches the roots.

Why is my Ehretia dropping leaves?

Leaf drop is a common stress reaction after a move, a change in light, or watering that is too much or too little. Keep conditions steady and check the soil.

Will an Ehretia recover after losing leaves?

Often, yes, if the cause is fixed early. Keep the plant in sun, water correctly and avoid pruning hard while it recovers.
